Last Day on Earth

June 23, 2023

I had a hard time with this song, and while I'm still not 100% satisfied, I need to move on to other things (like my next MRI in 3 days). First I came up with some minor chords, then had the idea for lyrics about the Last Day on Earth. However, I found the minor tone was depressing me needlessly, so I tried to turn into something major and more positive - when you're never sure which day (or more realistically which couple of months) might be last, you're motivated to do something every day to get the best out of it. Sometimes it's a major trip, sometimes it's just sitting with a coffee in the back yard and enjoying the sunshine and flowers. And while this carpe diem advice is important to me, it applies to everyone - yes, you too. (I resisted the temptation to end with a recording of Snagglepuss saying "Exit stage left!". But I did put in the same alarm clock that ends my song Insomnia)

Last Day on Earth
The sun is shining in my window
Showing me the way
To get my body out of bed
And start a brand-new day

What can I do to make the most
Of all this precious time?
A coffee in the sunshine first
Then find a word that rhymes

Chorus:
This could be my last day on earth,
Had 24000 of them since my birth
Some so beautiful, some so tough
Seems like I can't get enough

The sun is shining out of doors
A day to bike, or hike a tour?
But then again it just might rain
A perfect day for books again

Or maybe we should hit the road
We've so much left to see
Wherever we're together
Is the place to be

Chorus:
This could be my last day on earth,
Had 24000 of them since my birth
Some so beautiful, some so tough
Seems like I can't get enough

Chorus 2:
This could be my best day on earth
I'm gonna squeeze it for all it's worth
Every day here earns that much respect
Do make it the best one yet

Maybe you have noticed that
The sun shines for you too
And even when it rains,
Your fate is up to you

Don't know how many days I've got
But then neither do you
The thing is to make each one count
With what that means for you.

Chorus:
This could be my last day on earth,
Had 24000 of them since my birth
Some so beautiful, some so tough
Seems like I can't get enough

Chorus 2:
This could be your last day on earth
You gotta squeeze it for all it's worth
Every day here earns that much respect
To make it the best one yet

Chorus, modulated up:
This could be your best day on earth,
Treat it that way for I must insist
Find some thing that you've always missed
And take it off your bucket list!

Make it the best one yet!
