Birds of the Canary Islands

...and that includes canaries! Strangely the birds are named after the island, which is named after dogs: Pliny the Elder mentioned the islands, in particular Gran Canaria, as being plagued by dogs, and therefored dubbed Canariae Insulae (remember cave canem meaning beware of dog in Latin?). A total of 18 species is included.
