Looking Backwards
From the point of view of proof (especially since we're still trying to
puzzle it out and prove it), I like to tell the story going back in time.
Then I'll tell it again forwards for clarity:
My Kelly lines traces back to my great great grandfather Isaac Kelly,
who was born about 1815 according to U.S. census records.
The death certificate of my ancestor among his children, William Harrison
Kelly, lists his father as Isaac C. Kelly, and his mother as Sarah McMullen,
as do those of other children, although the oldest child in the family
(????), ___, lists Agnes McMullen as her mother. (This would apparently
be an earlier marriage, and not a name variation, as Sarah was too young
to be __'s mother.)
In 1860 and 1870 we find Isaac and family in Blacklick Township, Cambria
County. In 1860, he was listed as a cooper (barrel maker), but in
all other censuses, he is simply noted as a `laborer'. (William was
a stonemason.) In 1850, there is no Isaac Kelly in Cambria County,
but there is in nearly Indiana County, Wheatfield Township, where we find
Isaac, Sarah, and William. (__other kids___). In 1840, Isaac would
have been about 25, and one would expect to find him either as a young
man or still living with his parents.
In fact in1840 we find an Isaac Kelly in Tell Township, Huntingdon
Co: aged 20-30, with wife15-20, and son 0-4, sandwiched between Jane McMullen
(50-59) and Hugh McMullen (30-39). (Jane and Hugh must be relations of
Sarah-or of Agnes?-, but I don't know how yet. My latest theory - Jane
is the widow of Lawrence; but Sarah's mother was Elizabeth, so this is
perhaps a second wife or a woman named Elizabeth Jane; see my McMullen
page for details. Lawrence and Jane McMullen had a son named Hugh.)
How do we know this is the right Isaac Kelly?
-
Sarah's death certificate says she was born in Huntingdon Co.
-
The obituary of one child, Sarah Kelly Wilson, says she was born in 1854
in Black Log Valley, which is in Shirley Township, Huntingdon Co, extending
into Juniata County, and just over the Black Log Mountain from Tell Township.
(One wonders why she would have been born there, if the family had lived
in Indiana County in 1850, but this may never be clear. Perhaps they
moved back home before settling permanently in Cambria County. Maybe
she went to relatives to have the baby.)
-
The presence of the other McMullens as neighbors is a bit of circumstantial
evidence.
-
Isaac Kelly was nicknamed Levi and had a son named Levi; there was an Isaac
Kelly born in Shirley Township who had a brother named Levi (details below).
The picture given by the censuses is unclear in some aspects. For instance,
in 1860, they have only a single child, William, but in 1870 William appears
again with three older sisters. In all 15 children appear, the last born
about 1875. This means Sarah McMullen bore children for 31 years, from
1844 when she was about 16 until she was about 47! If this is accurate,
this is the largest number of children of the same mother in my entire
family tree.
Apparently Isaac married twice, and the earlier children's mother is
Agnes McMullen. See also notes on the 1860 census.
The next chronological step back was to the 1830 census. I looked for
Kelly families in Huntingdon County with sons around
15 and found 6 (2 John's, Joseph, William, Thomas, Mary). Of
these some fit the known locations better than others (___). Jenny
Amrhein checked the tax lists for Huntingdon County, and found that John
Kelly of Shirley Township (there was another John
in Dublin Township at the
same time) listed a son Isaac who was 6 in 1824, and therefore born
about 1818. This John also had a son Levi, which is a name that occurred
often in the family, and other children David, Nancy, Elizabeth, and Mary
according to the 1824 and 1817 tax lists. This John Kelly is our
most likely candidate as Isaac's father. (Note also the matches with Isaac's
children's names, which is hard to quantify since many were common names,
but seems good: William, Samuel, Isaac, John, Levi, David,
Edward, M. George; Nancy, Sophia, Elizabeth, Sarah, Jane, Ellen).
This John Kelly appears in the 1830 census where he's 50-59, so he would
be born 1771-1780. In the 1820 census, he would be born 1775 or later.
If both were accurate (perhaps unlikely in the early census), he would
be born 1775-1780. I couldn't find him in the 1810 census?
My conclusion: either:
-
A. John was a son of a Huntingdon County Kelly family, of which only James
Kelly had a son of the right age in the 1810 census, or
-
John arrived in Huntingdon County between 1810 and 1817, either:
-
from another Pennsylvania county, in which case
-
B. he might have been head of the family at 30-35 years of age, therefore
in the 26-45 category, or
-
C. the son of a Kelly family, of which there are too many to search, unless
it was in a neighboring county, or
-
D. he could even have arrived from another country.
Second John in Shirley Twp
A second John Kelly is listed in the 1830 census, in the next younger age
category than our John (40-49), who would be born 1781-1790. This
means that it's very difficult to distinguish the two.
Looking Forwards
Here's how the story looks told chronologically, assuming that John Kelly
is the right father.
John Kelly of Shirley Township
John Kelly was born around 1775-1780 (in the 1830 census, he's in
age group 50-59; in 1820, he's 26-45; the overlap gives a birth 1775-1780).
We don't yet know if he was born in the area. He first shows up
in the tax records around 1817, when he was about 40, and appears there
to the end of the records we checked in 1830. He appears in the census
in 1820 and 1830 Census in Shirley Township, Huntingdon Co. (Don't confuse
him with John Kelly
of Dublin Township, who lived at the same time.) There are some J.
Kellys in the 1810 census, but they don't match well. (If unmarried, he
might have been listed with his parents, although he certainly started
to have children around this time.) In 1830, his son Levy is listed
below him. As he does not appear in the 1840 census, he may have died between
1830 and 1840 at an age of 50-70. In John's household are:
-
1 male 50-59=John
-
1 male 30-39 = John, Jr.
-
4 males 20-30
-
1 male 15-20
-
spouse, 50-60
-
1 female, 20-30
-
2 females 15-20
John's Children:
-
A John, Jr., appears in tax records for the first time in 1820. I
presume you were probably 20 by the time you were taxes separately; then
he'd be born <= 1800. If this is John's son, then John, Sr probably
married <= 1800. In the 1850 census, there is a John Kelly, b
circa 1797 with wife Margaret and children John, Levy, Nancy,
Peter, and Christiana. This is likely John, Jr.
-
Levy - born 1800-1810 according to his listing in the 1830 census. Listed
in tax records as of school age in 1817. Levy is listed in tax records
for 1832 and 1833 as sharing land with Isaac Gifford. A Levy Kelly
appears in the census in 1830 in Shirley Twp (not Henderson as an Ancestry.com
lists). He was directly below Jno=Jonathon Kelly, which would be
his father (age , and near Joseph and John Gifford. He's listed as age
20-30. This is the only year where I found Levy in the census.
(In 1850 there are Levy's in Philadelphia, Massachusetts, and Alabama,
none of which are likely matches.)
-
(In 1800 there's an Isaac Gifford in Dublin Twp next to Joseph
G and 4 entries below William Kelly. An Isaac Gifford appears in the Tell/Fell
Twp census in 1820, 1830, and 1840 - but Levy is listed in those tax records
as in Shirley Twp? I haven't grabbed all the records yet. In the
1820 census he's on the same page as 1 In 1830 he's on the same page as
William McMullen and William Gifford and is 50-60. In 1840, he's 5 entries
away from William McMullen. He's 70-80 years old and therefore born
1760-1780, with sons 15-20 and 20-30, plus 2 daughters age 15-20 and 4
20-30. Benjamin, John, and James G. appear in the 1850 census in
Shirley and Dublin Twps.)
-
David - listed in tax records as of school age in 1817. Never appears
on his own in the Huntingdon Co census. (In 1840 there are 43 David
Kellys (not counting Kelleys, etc) in the census. One is age 20-30
and lives in Black Lick, Indiana Co with a wife 20-30, a daughter 5-10,
and 2 sons 0-5, so he's a possible candidate. But we also have to
consider that there are 6 other Kellys in Black Lick at that time who could
be his ancestors: Archibald, Abraham, George M., Peter, Samuel, and G.
And in 1850, this David does not appear, although there is a widowed(?)
Susan Kelly age 36 in 1850 with children aged 1-13. But one of the children
is Archibald, so we're probably in the Archibald Kelly family tree here.
David of Conemaugh Twp, Indiana Co, 1840 is 50-60, so no match.) (A David
is buried in Hopewell, Bedford Co.)
-
Nancy - listed in tax records as of school age in1817.
-
Elizabeth - listed in tax records as of school age in1817, and presumably
is the 10-year-old Eliza in 1824. According to age in 1824 tax records,
born ~1814
-
Mary - According to age 8 in 1824 tax records, born ~1816
-
Isaac - According to age 6 in 1824 tax records, born ~1818. This
contradicts all other census records, but in generally I would believe
an earlier source more when it comes to birth dates.
There is an Orphan's Court record for John Kelly, deceased, in Docket
E, which covers 1836-1843. The notation is something like "Administrator
account confirmed", so I'm not sure how much information will be in the
record. I will eventually have to order the microfilm. I held
off to get a chance to look up John
Kelly of Dublin Township, whose info I'm not interested in. But
this can't be him, as he died in 1869 (hmm, not so sure). So maybe
this is the John of the Shirley Twp tax records - also interesting because
that John disappears from the census after 1830.
Here's an analysis of the census records: (___ redo in style of Thomas
Kelly)

The Mormon Church's FamilySearch database shows:

Candidates for Isaac's Father
I've outlined the John Kelly theory above.
Other possible fathers based on the 1830 census records:
-
James Kelly in tax records of Shirley Township, 1814-1818. Since
he stops appearing then, he is probably the James whose will lists a death
in 1819 and sons Joshua and Moses. (I believe a Joshua shows up in
other tax records. ____. See also Hunt.
Co queries re a Joshua w son James)
-
William, taxes 1823 only, notation "has fits", crossed out (because unable
to pay through disability?). Could also be a son; additional sons
or brothers are listed in the 1820 census.
Thomas Kelly
Jan favors Cromwell Township Kellys as our relations since Sarah Kelly
Wilson was born at Black Log Valley, which is in Cromwell Township.
Thomas is the only Cromwell Township Kelly who has a son of Isaac Kelly'
s age in the 1830 census. Below is an attempt to gather all info
I can on Thomas Kelly and speculate whether a son Isaac would fit
in.
According to the 1850 census, when Thomas was 72 years old, he would
have been born about 1778. His wife Mary is 66 then, so born about
1784. (The 1850 census also lists Thomas as born in Maryland!
His wife and children are marked born in Pa.) He can be found with
near certainty in the 1830-1850 census in Huntingdon County. In 1820
when Thomas and Mary would have been 42 and 36 years old, there is a Thomas
Kelly (only one in the county) who is of the right age (26-45), but that
range is so broad to be nearly meaningless. Adding some uncertainty,
there are not only children of 0-9, 10-16, which matches the 1830 census,
but also a son and daughter of 16-26, which is pushing things, and 2 additional
males of age 26-45. These can well be other relations, but it's difficult
to draw conclusions with only the ages to go on. This Thomas. Kelly
is listed in Henderson Twp, not in Springfield as Thomas is in 1830.
This entry is thus somewhat uncertain. In 1810, the picture is even
less clear. There is only a T. Kelly, this time in Huntingdon Twp.
He and his wife are both 26-45 (which fits), and they have 4 children of
ages 0-10 and 10-16. Again, the older child is problematic: if she
is exactly 10, she would have been born in 1800, when Mary should have
been 16, which was quite young for having children even then. There
are many explanations: Thomas could have married twice, which was common
given the high chances of a woman's dying in childbirth; it could be a
niece; or this could be a different family.
If Isaac is Thomas's son and born in 1815, and Thomas was born in Maryland,
then Thomas moved to Huntingdon Co no later than 1814. Another Thomas
Kelly listed very near the elder Thomas in 18__ may well be Thomas, Jr.
He is also listed as being born in Pa.
There is a mention of some Kelly girls, Sarah (b. 1763) and Mary (b.
1774-1784), marrying Corbins from Carroll (then Baltimore) Co, who moved
to and died in Huntingdon Co - it's not clear if the Kelly girls moved
from Maryland or were already in Pa. (See the Cassville
section below for details. According to the web page, Micija Corbin
already in 1800, and in 1820 was in Henderson Twp, along with Thomas Kelly.
According to the census data for Elijah Corbins' children, those born up
to 1799 were born in Maryland; one born in 1807 was born in Pa. Furthermore
the one born in 1807 was named "William Kelly Corbin".). It would
be worth looking for Kellys in the Carroll/Baltimore Co area for Thomas'
family. (In 1800, there were 3 Baltimore Co Kelly's, John, another
John, and Benjamin. In 1790 there were 3 female Kellys listed, plus
Edward, Matthew, Michael, Thos and William. William
is listed on roll M637_3, Patapsco Lower Hundred, page 30.)
I'll try a table as the Corbin researcher did to organize this stuff.
According to the 1850 census, Thomas is born ~1778, wife Mary is born
~1784. Caleb Kelly age 44 in 1850 is thus b. ~1806 (See query
that lists "Caleb Kelly b. 11-25-1806 in PA d. 11-27-1865 Cromwell
Township, Huntingdon County (bured Kelly Farm Cemetary) m. Margaret
Moore b. 5-13-1808 d. 3-10-1880."). Another Thomas Kelly next
to Caleb Kelly in 1850 is b. ~1814, but he is difficult to explain since
there is also a younger Thomas (b ~1838) living with Thomas and Mary in
1850. Isaac is b ~1815.

Candidates for John Kelly's father
James Kelly
According to census records, should be born <= 1755 (age 45+ in 1800)
(redundantly <= 1765 b/c 45+ in 1810).
He's probably the James Kelly "yeoman" who granted a mortgage to Gilbert
M. Lloyd of Shirleysburg "gentleman" on 7 April 1817 (Book Q, No. 1, Page
29) in the amount of $1260.
He died about 1818, when his will was probated. Sons Moses and
Joshua are mentioned.
According to the census records he had the following children:
1790: 5 sons and 1 daughter: 3 sons 16 and over = b. <= 1774, 2
sons 15 or less = b. >= 1775; one daughter of unknown age
1800: one son 10-16=b. 1784-1790; 2 sons 16-25 = b. 1775-1784, he himself
and wife b <= 1755. (Thus 2 sons may have left home; possibly Charles,
also of Huntingdon Twp, and Joshua of Union Twp, known to be a son?)
1810: one son at home 26-45 = b. 1765-1784 (2 more sons have left home:
)
Moses: There's an M. Kelly b. 1785-1794 in the 1810 census, but Moses
Kelly 1820 is age 45+ = b. <= 1775; __
Willliam: candidate for son based on being in Huntingdon Twp and having
a Wm mentioned as bro of Charles P.; b. 1765-1784 re 1810 census; there's
a William in Union Twp in 1800 born <= 1755, so doesn't match; but in
1820 in __ Twp, William is likely b. 1775-1782. The bro of Charles
P. died circa 1849, Scott County, Illinios
Stephen Kelly could be one of sons A-C based on being in Huntingdon
Twp in 1820 (b. <= 1775), but he's neither living at home nor elsewhere
in Huntingdon Twp in 1810?
Children:
-
James, Junier Kelly, own household in 1790, married without children;
b. <= 1774. Does not appear in later census entries.
-
Son A: b. <= 1774 re 1790 census; perhaps Charles, b. 1754-1774
re 1800 census. Last appears in census 1810?
-
Son B: b. <= 1774 re 1790 census; perhaps Joshua, b. 1754-1774
re 1800 census but probably closer to 1774. Not indexed in 1830 (maybe
should check Huntingdon Twp by hand?) but in 1840: b. 1760-1770,
nearly possible son Hugh.
-
Son C: b. <= 1774 re 1790 census, perhaps Moses Kelly 1820 is
age 45+ = b. <= 1775. Last appears in census 1820 age 45+.
-
Son D: b. >= 1775 re 1790 census; could be William, likely b. 1775-1782,
seen in 1810 and 1820 census. (Follow up William 1830 Shirley, and on
2 Williams in 1840 census.)
-
Son E: b. >= 1775 re 1790 census, b. 1765-1784 re 1810 census - this could
be John, and we haven't found a more likely candidate for this son
so far - but what could we do to prove or disprove the theory?
-
Dau A: possibly married <= 1800, = b. <= 1784; could also have died
young, etc., almost no info to go on
If James Kelly was in a position to grant a mortgage of $1260, it would
be odd that his son John was listed as poor in the tax lists. Of
course, there could have been bad blood between them, for instance. Only
2 of the 5 sons are listed in James' will.
The Hunt
Some tactics I've tried, am trying, or will try.
-
Look for possible fathers of Isaac, starting with names of his sons: William,
Samuel, Isaac, John, Levi, David, Edward, M. George
-
I looked for possible
fathers of Isaac in the Indiana County area where he first shows up
in the census. That turned out to be the wrong tack, since he turns
out to be from Huntingdon County, but I saved the information in a separate
page.
-
Look for Kellys in Huntingdon County,
since Barbara Haney has both Isaac's marriage and the christening of his
first(?) child listed as taking place in Huntingdon (which I imagine refers
to the town in Huntingdon County, Pa.).
-
Look for land records. (Coming soon.)
-
Look for wills and estate records. (Coming soon.)
-
Try to figure out which Kellys belong to some well-documented Kelly families
of the area, and see if Isaac fits in there, or at least figure out which
Kellys I can exclude. See info on the James Kelly of Franklin and
Indiana Counties.
The Details
John Kelly of Dublin
Twp, Huntingdon Co
There were John Kellys at the same time in Shirley and Dublin Townships
in Huntingdon Co. In fact, both had sons John, I believe, and in
the 1833 tax lists, three John Kellys are mentioned. Here are some
details on the Dublin Twp John(s) to help keep him/them separate:
-
"Among the other settlers who came here between 1790 and 1812 were ...
George Kelly, John Kelley" from History of Dublin Township page,
http://www.rootsweb.com/~pahuntin/townships/dublin/hist-dublin.htm
-
Africa's History of Hunt. Co. mentions a John Kelly present in Dublin Twp
in 1799.
-
John Kelly, will dated Aug 3, 1836, records refer to wife, Polly;
children: George, James, Nathaniel. (See elsewhere ref to John Kelly, son
of George, b. 1829, moved to Ohio and Illinois)
-
A query on the Huntingdon Co board says, "Catharine Kelly (1800-1888),
d/o John & Nancy Kelly, also of Dublin Twp., m. Samuel S. Thompson
b. 1802 Dublin Twp., Huntingdon Co. d. 1879 Marion Co., W.Va" - but the
wifes name is not Polly!?
-
A tombstone at Burnt Cabins (which lies in __ Twp, Fulton Co, just across
the border of __ Twp, Huntingdon Co) marks the grave of John Kelly, 1794-1869.
His wife Elizabeth is buried there. Nathaniel Kelly, 1786-1856, and
his wife Mary are also buried there. (This could be the son of the
John who died 1836.) (Someone has a family
tree of his descendants but not ancestors at Ancestry.com)
-
List of Dublin Township officers from web ( http://www.rootsweb.com/~pahuntin/townships/cromwell/hist-civiloff.htm

Land Warrants
For background information on Pa. Land Warrants, see this

were necessary: Application for a warrant; warrant; survey; application
for a patent; and finally the patent.

warrantees of land in Huntingdon County:

Orphan's Court Records
The Orphan's Court Records did not turn up as much as I had hoped, and
we already know that there are not many early Kelly wills. Here's
what I found. The dates are those of the earliest record, usually
the death year but not necessarily:
-
1808, Samuel Kelley is witness for estate of Benjamin Briggs (Docket Aor
B)
-
August 1816, James Kelly is witness for estate of George Clugage. The costs
for travel, inquest, surveyor, etc totalled 46.34 - perhaps this is a reason
that many estates were settled outside of the courts? (Docket Aor B)
-
1816-1830 (=Docket C), William C. Kelly
-
1830-1838 (=Docket D), Stephen Kelly
-
orphan Rebecca Kelly, 1830-1838 (=Docket D)
-
1836-1843 (Docket E), John Kelly [I've ordered the microfilm]
-
1849, William Kelly
-
orphan James Kelly, guardian appointed 1856
-
1861, Asher Kelly
-
1864, Thomas Kelly, guardian appointed daughter Lillie
-
1856, James Kelly, guardian appointed for son James, Jr.
-
1871, Nathaniel Kelly
-
1871, William T. Kelly
-
1871 Mary J. Kelly, guardian appointed for minors
-
1874, William Kelly
-
Lilly Kelly, guardian discharged 1877
-
1880, George B. Kelly
-
1883, James Kelly, Fulton Co., properties decreed to Mary E. Kelly et al
-
1883, Stephen Kelly
-
1884, John M. Kelly, real estate sold to Keren H. Kelly
-
1885, Stephen Kelly, guardian appointed for minors (same as Stephen 1883?)
-
1887, Stephen Kelly, guardian appointed for minor Gertrude
-
After 1889 the names Lawrence O (1984), Henry (1905), Alfred T (1916),
Jacob (1918, 1921, 1923), and William Kelly guardian of Edna (1924) appear.

Census Data (Other

Huntingdon County census data is listed in a separate section below.
Isaac is listed in the Indiana and Clearfield census records from 1850--1880.
The 1870 census lists his parents as being from Pennsylvania. This cannot
be relied on 100\%, but is a good working theory in the absence of other
evidence.

Thomas should be 22.
No Thomas. His entry in the 1850 census says from Maryland, so
he might be one of the 26 Kelly families there.
In Maryland:
-
Kent Co • Unknown Townships, p. 150: Thos. Kelly 45+ with wife 45+, son
10-16, dau 10-16, p.
-
Montgomery Co, 1st District, p. 150: Thomas Kelly of Thos, M 3/1/1/1/0,
F 2/1/1/1/0 = age 26-45
-
Ditto, same page, Thomas Kelly, Senr, M 1/0/0/1/1, F 0/1/0/0/1, age 45+.
1810 Census
-
As John Kelly does not appear in the census himself this year, we are looking
for families with a son 30-39 or 16-35, hence preferrably 30-35 - so essentially
category 16-45, with an elder male as head of the family. The
only such family is J. (probably James) Kelly of Huntingdon Twp, where
a couple aged 45+ has a single male 26-45 at home. Grouped with J.
are M. (Moses, 16-26, married without children), Wm (William, 26-45), and
C. (Charles, 26-45). Note however that there are also reference to
a James, Jr. - who could be this son.
-
Township notes:
Tell Township was formed in 1810, but probably does not appear in the census
yet. Cromwell will be formed in 1836 from parts of Shirley and Springfield
Twps.
-
Census format: Males and females 0 to 10, 10 to 16, 16 to 26, 26 to 45,
45 and older; ; number of other free persons except Indians not taxed;
number of slaves; and town or district and county of residence.
-
If John Kelly is in another county of Pennsylvania, then we have 25 images
to check out, + 7 John Kelleys, and must find one who was no longer in
the same place in 1830 (and perhaps that would be the faster way to check
them, since we wouldn't need to check all images.)

Males: 1-0-0-1-0
Females: 0-0-1-0-0 - wife = 16-26; check wife's age in later
censuses? In 1830, she's 50-59, which would make her 30-39 in 1810;
in 1820, she's 26-45, which would mean 40-45 if both 1820 and 1830 were
correct, and therefore 30-35 in 1810. So not the perfect match :-(
Note: in 1820, there's only one John in Franklin Co, in Metal
Twp. - which borders Huntingdon Co. It's sorted alphabetically,
so he's next to a Samuel Kelly.
Males: 2-0-0-0-1-0, Females: 2-1-0-1-0-0. He's therefore 26-45.

Isaac is born in 1815 according to later census records, which means he
would probably be listed as 15-20, but possibly as 10-15. The families
marked in bold have a son of suitable age. Dublin Township is where
Lawrence McMullen lived in 18__. Tell Township is where most of the
McMullens lived. Shirley Township is where Black Log Valley is located.

most of these entries are incorrectly listed as Henderson Township when

1840 Census
Cromwell Township was newly formed in 1836 from Shirley and Springfield
townships
There's an Isaac
Kelly in Tell Township, Huntingdon Co, 20-30, with wife 15-20, and
son 0-4, sandwiched between Jane McMullen (50-59) and Hugh McMullen (30-39).
This seems to be our man, especially after seeing Barbara Haney' reference
to Sophia Kelly being born in Huntingdon in 1845. Then our Isaac
would be in Huntingdon and not Indiana County. See image in appendix.
John Kellys in Huntingdon Co in 1840 (our John
Kelly candidate would be 60-69 if still living): 1 each in Dublin Twp,
Cromwell Twp (age 15-20?), and Blair Twp; also 1 in Juniata, in Lack Twp
(age 40-50). Also a Nancy Kelly in Juniata, in Lack Twp, age 60-69,
right age to be a widow of John - and Lack Twp also contains part of the
Black Log Valley, I think. (In 1850, there are no Kellys in Lack
Twp.)
There are 23 total Kelly families in Huntingdon Co in 1840. Double-check
Townships, they're sometimes wrong in Ancestry's search.

1860 Census
Huntingdon County isn't indexed :-(
Sarah McMullen / Lawrence McMullen in the Census
More info on my McMullen
page.
No Lawrence McMullen with exact spelling or Soundex in 1850 census.
1840: no Lawrence McMullen in Pa either with or without space after
Mc, with or without Soundex. There are 9 matches in Huntingdon Co,
but none in Dublin Twp.
1830: found Lawrence in Dublin Twp, Huntingdon Co, Pa. Has a
daughter 0-4, meaning he matches B. Haney's records. His age is 60-69,
he has male residents (sons?) of age 15-20, and 20-30, so the 0-4 year
old may well be a granddaughter of Larwence. Dublin Twp is where
Burnt Cabins (Peggy Jo Bradnick kidnapping?) and Shade Grove are located.
There are at least 6 Kellys shown on the 1873 map from __ atlas (see bllklly/gene/PA/Huntingdon
Co)
Isaac C. Kelly, m. Mary Josephine Kelly
There was another Isaac Kelly in Huntingdon County, who did not stay there.
An obituary from 1922 lists Mrs. I.C. Kelly as dying in Latrobe (Ohio?)
at the age of 66 years, 8 months and 7 days, meaning she was born in 1856.
She was the eldest daughter of the late Robert G. and Nancy GILLILAND GIFFORD,
of Shirley Township. I haven't yet seen listed who Isaac's father was -
but possible a Thomas Kelly, b. 1814, whose son Isaac was born ca. 1848
according to the 1850 census?

Miscellaneous
Lydia Kelly is mentioned in the context of "descendants of Samuel Lewis
and Lydia Kelly" in the web page LEWIS,
Evan's Descendants: Notes and References. See also the Lewis
Page at RootsWeb. There is says, that Joseph Lewis, 1792-1880,
son of David Lewis, first appears in the tax list of Huntingdon Co, PA,
in 1820, as a single freeman. "In the 1830 Census he is in Half Moon
Twp, Center Co, PA which is located right next to Warrior's Mark Twp, Huntingdon
Co, PA". " Samuel H. Lewis, born 16 Nov 1823 at Bald Eagle, Huntingdon
Co, PA; married Ellen Beamer." [Isn't Bald Eagle where William Kelly of
the Franklin County Kellys lived? But that was in Centre County?]
Samuel was born 1770; his brother, Joshua Lewis, born circa 1775;
married Nancy Kelly. They were sons of Evan Lewis (1735-1806) and
Margaret (--?--), born at Cumberland Co, PA.

Other letters to Tom include courtship letters from Annie Kelly of Huntingdon
Co. during the civil war (dated 1864-1865) in an Appleby
Family web page.
-
The Archibald Kelly family of Butler County (next to Indiana, but in the
wrong direction from Huntingdon Co) is described in "History
of Butler County Pennsylvania, 1895".

1800 to 1800-1812, opposite J. Clark's tailor shop. (Note: in the map
of Shirleysburg from the 1873 Huntingdon Co Atlas, John M. Clark is
listed as proprietor of a Taylor shop. The Franklin Hotel is the
only thing close to a tavern; there are no Kellys.)

Queries from Others
Over the years I've gotten many queries from other people seeking McMullens,
and have usually noted them for the case that they do turn out to be related,
or I come across information on them during my own search. Here are
a few. I won't included e-mail addresses, since they tend to get
sucked up into spam databases, and I don't want do that to anyone.

While not a query per se, there's an interesting web page relating love
letters of an Annie Kelly of Huntingdon Co near Shade Gap to Thomas Appleby
at http://www.clements.umich.edu/Gurls/Guides/Appleby.html.
She was probably born about 1840-1845; it would be fun to identify her.
She married David Willes on April 28, 1868.

Cromwell is one of the interior townships of the south part of Huntingdon
County, and was erected from Shirley and Springfield townships in January,
1836, and named "in honour of Col. Thomas Cromwell, deceased, who was an
early settler and a distinguished and hospitable citizen," and is bounded
on the northeast by Shirley, southeast by Tell and Dublin, southwest by
Springfield and Clay, and on the northwest by Cass and Shirley townships.
-
Dublin - apparently one of the original townships. Its boundaries
changed in 1810 when Tell township was formed from it.
-
Shirley - apparently one of the original townships. Its boundaries
changed in 1836 when Cromwell township was formed.
-
Springfield - apparently one of the original townships. Its
boundaries changed in 1836 when Cromwell township was formed, and in 1845
when Clay township was formed from it.
-
Tell "This is one of the southeast border townships of Huntingdon
County, and was erected from Dublin township in April, 1810, and bounded
as follows: On the northeast by Juniata County, on the southeast by Franklin
County, on the southwest by Dublin township, and on the northwest by Cromwell
and Shirley townships." (excerpt from J. Simpson Africa's History of Huntingdon
County, PA)
