Appearance and identification: Funny red head that's brown with a golden forehead is the obvious characteristic. Also has a nice black and white pattern on its back and wings with white-rimmed black feathers at the end of the wing, a bit of white before a black butt.

• Der Grünspecht fällt neben dem laut lachenden Balzruf auch durch den wellenförmigen Flug auf, bei dem er die Flügel zwischen zwei Schlagphasen ganz an den Körper anlegt. Neben dem Wendehals ist er unter den Spechtarten Europas am stärksten auf Ameisen spezialisiert.
