Birdweather summary
28 species were so seldom 'detected' that I think they were a mistake or a rarity, and will omit them from the table below: Eurasian skylark, Egyptian goose, Graylag goose, Meadow pipit, Water pipit, Common swift, Great egret, Rock dove, Common raven, Mute swan, Black woodpecker, Little egret, Yellowhammer, Eurasian jay, Yellow-legged gull, Common linnet, Gadwall, Black kite, Western yellow wagtail, Great cormorant, Willow warbler, Willow tit, Eurasian bullfinch, European serin, European nuthatch, Little grebe, Green sandpiper, Mistle thrush.
Ignoring those rare detections, let's look at birds seen especially in the summer, or in the fall.
21 species have not been detected since the beginning of September, some having migrated south, some that were uncommon in any case: Common kingfisher, Eurasian teal, Mallard, Grey heron, Common buzzard, Black-headed gull, Common wood pigeon, Common house martin, Great spotted woodpecker, European robin, European pied flycatcher, Common chaffinch, Eurasian coot, Common snipe, European crested tit, Spotted flycatcher, Eurasian tree sparrow, Coal tit, Black redstart, Eurasian green woodpecker, Common starling.
10 species have only been detected after the beginning of September. Some may move to a different area in the winter, e.g. down from the mountains.I expect some don't find enough to eat in our woods now, or are young birds who like to join a flock that makes expeditions down the Luppmen brook that runs past our house. Here they are: Short-toed treecreeper, Hawfinch, Common reed bunting, Brambling, Dunnock, Goldcrest, Eurasian siskin, Black cap warbler, Song thrush, Fieldfare.
Bird | Mistaken for | First Detection | Latest Detection | Number of Detections | Notes |
Common blackbird | 11 August 2024 | 20 January 2025 | 1155
White wagtail | 10 August 2024 | 20 January 2025 | 967 | I'm used to seeing white wagtails (Bachstelzen) at farms, and occasionally at larger creeks/small rives. Here they're detected with about the same frequency as the gray wagtails (Gebirgsstelze). As with them, the thing I really miss is actually seeing them!
Tree pipit | Mistaken for Common chiffchaff. | 12 August 2024 | 13 September 2024 | 60 | I'm somewhat suspicious about the detection of a tree pipit on 2024-08-31 06:56:58 when before and after it a Chiffchaff/Zilpzalp was detected. Detected in August and September but not since September 13, 2024. |
Common snipe | 15 August 2024 | 07 November 2024 | 70 | Rather a summer species. Frequently detected by mistake (what might it be?), very unlikely. Infreqently detected.
Brambling | 17 October 2024 | 14 January 2025 | 102 | Rather an autumn or winter species. I wasn't sure if it made sense to hear Brambling/Bergfink here, but I see I photographed one in Fehraltorf in January 2023. Also today 14 November 2024, MerlinSoundID also detected one. Infreqently detected.
Water pipit | 06 October 2024 | 08 November 2024 | 12 | Unexpected but possible...surprising? Infreqently detected.
Eurasian blue tit | 06 August 2024 | 20 January 2025 | 21459
Common linnet | 19 September 2024 | 29 October 2024 | 9 | Infreqently detected.
Common chaffinch | 19 August 2024 | 20 January 2025 | 2808 | Rather a summer species.
Great spotted woodpecker | 09 August 2024 | 31 December 2024 | 53 | Rather a summer species. Infreqently detected.
Jackdaw | Mistaken for Eurasian magpie. Infreqently detected. |
Common kingfisher | 18 August 2024 | 20 January 2025 | 34 | Rather a summer species. Unexpected but possible...surprising? The detection of 30.09.2024 is of 10 notes, the first falling from 9k to 6k; should check XenoCanto if anyone has reported something like that, otherwise see if there's a more likely bird.
Eurasian magpie | 07 August 2024 | 20 January 2025 | 10750
Eurasian siskin | 30 September 2024 | 20 January 2025 | 217 | Rather an autumn or winter species. Unexpected but possible...surprising? Infreqently detected.
Eurasian skylark | 08 October 2024 | 09 October 2024 | 4 | The recording I listed to was a single falling note. I was skeptical, but it does match XC946652 pretty well. Not detected frequently. Infreqently detected.
Eurasian tree sparrow | 08 August 2024 | 18 January 2025 | 1212 | Rather a summer species.
Rock dove | 16 August 2024 | 09 January 2025 | 9
Willow warbler | 15 August 2024 | 18 September 2024 | 14 | Infreqently detected. Not present the whole year, just March until October.
Common sandpiper | 08 August 2024 | 30 September 2024 | 416 | Unexpected but possible...surprising? XenoCanto shows call of about 5 notes, Birdweather usually records on of three notes - is there a more likely bird for three notes?
Short-toed treecreeper | 06 August 2024 | 20 January 2025 | 489 | Rather an autumn or winter species. Infreqently detected.
Common redstart | 17 August 2024 | 06 October 2024 | 199 | Unexpected but possible...surprising? Not present the whole year, just March until October.
Grey wagtail | 08 August 2024 | 20 January 2025 | 1101 | These are are detected at roughly the same frequency as Common blackbirds (Amsel) and Eurasian tree sparrows (Feldsperlinge), so they may well be around. However, I've never seen one and would love to!
Eurasian bullfinch | 10 October 2024 | 30 November 2024 | 5 | Unexpected but possible...surprising? Infreqently detected.
European serin | 08 August 2024 | 08 August 2024 | 1 | Vogelwarte.ch sagt: 'Häufiger Brutvogel, seltener Wintergast', darum wurde keine aufgenommen seit August Infreqently detected.
Yellowhammer | 20 September 2024 | 02 December 2024 | 18 | Infreqently detected.
Graylag goose | 07 September 2024 | 13 January 2025 | 29 | Infreqently detected.

European greenfinch | 06 August 2024 | 18 January 2025 | 660 | Infreqently detected.
European crested tit | 13 August 2024 | 20 January 2025 | 111 | Rather a summer species. One more bird that I was skeptical about its presence in Fehraltorf, that's been reported at the Pfaeffikersee and Chatzensee. Infreqently detected.
Black redstart | 09 August 2024 | 22 December 2024 | 1983 | Rather a summer species.
House sparrow | 06 August 2024 | 20 January 2025 | 6056
Dunnock | 09 October 2024 | 14 December 2024 | 48 | Rather an autumn or winter species. Unexpected but possible...surprising? Infreqently detected.
Hawfinch | Mistaken for European robin. | 09 October 2024 | 20 January 2025 | 1133 | Rather an autumn or winter species. Frequently detected by mistake, but when I listened to it, it was really a robin. Listened to some newer recordings up to November 14, and it's often a single note. At Vogelwarte I hear a series of single notes repeated in a somewhat irregular rhythm, with a slightly higher note once in a while. I checked ornitho.ch to see if any are being reported in Kanton Zuerich, and yes, one was even reported at the Pfaeffikersee, close to home. Then wanted to know more about them, and found some interesting information: Vogelwarte.ch says 'der fast starengrosse Kernbeisser ist ein Charaktervogel der Laubwaelder. Dort heisst es auch sie sind in Siedlungen zu sehen (woanders hiess es in Gaerten.) And they can be seen year round (ganzjaehrig haeufig), as they're breeders, Durchzuegler and winter guests. MerlinBirdID mentions that the beak is grey in summer and pinkish in winter. Also 'despite distinctive appearance, shy and easily overlooked.' I wanted to see or hear one personally, so I guess I should not give up! Infreqently detected. |
European nuthatch | 13 October 2024 | 07 December 2024 | 4 | Infreqently detected.
Great tit | 08 August 2024 | 20 January 2025 | 6306
Common raven | 09 August 2024 | 11 January 2025 | 29 | I listened to one Birdweather detection, and it was a dog barking!.

Eurasian teal | 26 August 2024 | 08 January 2025 | 47 | Rather a summer species. Unexpected but possible...surprising?

Common starling | 26 August 2024 | 31 October 2024 | 87 | Rather a summer species. Vogelwarte says they migrate by late November, but some spend the winter here. I was seeing large flocks of them, but haven't for some weeks. As usual, some people did report sitings on ornitho.ch, e.g. at Pfaeffikersee Sued and Chatzensee. Infreqently detected.

Eurasian collared dove | 06 August 2024 | 20 January 2025 | 11340
Fieldfare | 01 October 2024 | 09 January 2025 | 116 | Rather an autumn or winter species. Infreqently detected.
Green sandpiper | 13 August 2024 | 07 September 2024 | 13 | Unexpected but possible...surprising?
Meadow pipit | 09 October 2024 | 10 November 2024 | 14 | I was skeptical that we might hear Wiesenpieper/meadow pipits in Fehraltorf, but they are seen year-round in Switzerland (they breed here, but often migrate south). I checked on November 17 in ornitho.ch, and saw that they'd been observed at the Chatzensee, Wetzikon-Ettenhausen and Pfaeffikersee-Sued, so they're not as exotic as I thought. Infreqently detected.
