Birdweather summary

Birds recognized by my BirdWeather device starting in summer 2024 when I bought it. A total of 90 species was 'detected', some of which were incorrect.

Bird Mistaken for/seen First Detection Latest Detection Number of Detections/Season Notes
Black cap warbler I've seen this species here. 12 August 2024 07 May 2025 2147 detected. Detected from March to October Migratory species. Somewhat strange that one of these was singing away near the house in March 2025, but BirdWeather didn't detect it. The angle may have been bad, but I'm surprised. I did see one in 2025 by March.
Black redstart 09 August 2024 07 May 2025 5182 detected. Heard year-round.
Brambling This species has been seen in our area according to ornitho.ch. 17 October 2024 14 January 2025 102 detected. Detected from January to December I wasn't sure if it made sense to hear Brambling/Bergfink here, but I see I photographed one in Fehraltorf in January 2023. Also today 14 November 2024, MerlinSoundID also detected one. But I checked the detection of May 2, 2025, and it was actually a Buchfink that sang - the beginning of the melody of the two sounds similar, but after a few notes they're distinct, so this is a BirdNet mistake. Infreqently detected.
Carrion crow 07 August 2024 07 May 2025 3313 detected. Heard year-round.
Coal tit 12 August 2024 07 May 2025 520 detected. Heard year-round. Infreqently detected.
Common blackbird 11 August 2024 07 May 2025 18723 detected. Heard year-round.
Common buzzard 06 August 2024 07 May 2025 696 detected. Heard year-round. Infreqently detected.
Common chaffinch 19 August 2024 04 May 2025 3177 detected. Heard year-round.
Common chiffchaff 08 August 2024 01 May 2025 6109 detected. Detected from February to November
Common firecrest 01 October 2024 07 May 2025 174 detected. Detected from March to October I've never heard a recording that sounded convincing. Among 10, one consisted of two notes, but maybe it was the sound of something braking (we are next to a short bridge where people may slow down). In many there's a lot of noise. Infreqently detected.
Common kestrel 11 August 2024 23 April 2025 342 detected. Heard year-round. Infreqently detected.
Common kingfisher 18 August 2024 23 April 2025 47 detected. Detected from January to December Unexpected but possible...surprising? The detection of 30.09.2024 is of 10 notes, the first falling from 9k to 6k; should check XenoCanto if anyone has reported something like that, otherwise see if there's a more likely bird. Infreqently detected.
Common moorhen 09 August 2024 01 May 2025 153 detected. Detected from January to December Unexpected but possible...surprising? Infreqently detected.
Common raven 09 August 2024 23 March 2025 33 detected. Detected from January to December I listened to one Birdweather detection, and it was a dog barking!. Infreqently detected.
Common sandpiper 08 August 2024 30 September 2024 418 detected. Detected from August to September Migratory species. Infreqently detected.
Common snipe 15 August 2024 07 November 2024 70 detected. Detected from August to November Frequently detected by mistake (what might it be?), very unlikely. Infreqently detected.
Common starling 26 August 2024 29 April 2025 94 detected. Detected from March to October Vogelwarte says they migrate by late November, but some spend the winter here. I was seeing large flocks of them, but haven't for some weeks. As usual, some people did report sitings on ornitho.ch, e.g. at Pfaeffikersee Sued and Chatzensee. Infreqently detected.
Common swift I've seen this species here. 14 August 2024 07 May 2025 220 detected. Detected from April to August Vogelwarte.ch meint Brutzeit fertig in August, Zug von spät Juli bis Ende September; hier haben wir etwas früher keine mehr gehört. Infreqently detected. Not present the whole year, just April until August.
Dunnock Mistaken when actual bird was Eurasian blue tit. 09 October 2024 20 April 2025 70 detected. Detected from March to December One of the least often detected birds. Not detected before October, so one could take them as migrant birds. I would be very interested to hear/see one thought! In November 2024 they've been reported at the Chatzenseen, as are any number of other interesting birds. Maybe time for a trip there? Checking the detections, they're often actually Blaumeisen/blue tits. Infreqently detected.
Eurasian blue tit 06 August 2024 07 May 2025 67920 detected. Heard year-round.
Eurasian collared dove 06 August 2024 07 May 2025 19854 detected. Heard year-round.
Eurasian coot 11 August 2024 07 May 2025 245 detected. Heard year-round. Morgens wird oft ein Blässhuhn 'identifiziert', wenn es nur ein mechanisches Rauschen ist, und kein Vogel. In der Nacht klint es schonals ob eins vorbei fliegt. Infreqently detected.
Eurasian green woodpecker 09 August 2024 16 April 2025 96 detected. Detected from March to November I listened to a number 'detections' and heard nothing like a green woodpecker/Gruenspecht, so I'm quite sure it's an error. In one case when looking at details, it was a Kohlmeise/great tit; in other cases it was machinery. Infreqently detected.
Eurasian magpie 07 August 2024 07 May 2025 12599 detected. Heard year-round.
Eurasian siskin 30 September 2024 16 April 2025 275 detected. Heard year-round. Infreqently detected.
Eurasian skylark 08 October 2024 09 October 2024 4 detected. Detected in October The recording I listed to was a single falling note. I was skeptical, but it does match XC946652 pretty well. Infreqently detected.
Eurasian tree sparrow 08 August 2024 04 May 2025 2028 detected. Heard year-round.
Eurasian wren 11 September 2024 13 April 2025 3156 detected. Heard year-round.
European crested tit 13 August 2024 23 April 2025 237 detected. Heard year-round. One more bird that I was skeptical about its presence in Fehraltorf, that's been reported at the Pfaeffikersee and Chatzensee. Infreqently detected.
European goldfinch 06 August 2024 06 May 2025 13731 detected. Heard year-round.
European greenfinch 06 August 2024 06 May 2025 1454 detected. Heard year-round.
European robin 08 August 2024 03 May 2025 10347 detected. Heard year-round.
European serin 08 August 2024 04 May 2025 62 detected. Detected from March to August Vogelwarte.ch sagt: 'Häufiger Brutvogel, seltener Wintergast', darum wurde keine aufgenommen seit August Infreqently detected.
Fieldfare I've seen this species here. 01 October 2024 03 May 2025 124 detected. Infreqently detected.
Goldcrest 01 October 2024 16 April 2025 357 detected. Heard year-round. Infreqently detected.
Great tit 08 August 2024 07 May 2025 19308 detected. Heard year-round.
Grey heron 11 August 2024 01 May 2025 371 detected. Heard year-round. Infreqently detected.
Grey wagtail I've seen this species here. 08 August 2024 03 May 2025 6665 detected. Heard year-round. These are are detected at roughly the same frequency as Common blackbirds (Amsel) and Eurasian tree sparrows (Feldsperlinge), so they may well be around. On March 11, 2025 I may have seen some flying from bush to bush, and finally got a good picture and video.
Hawfinch Mistaken when actual bird was European robin. 09 October 2024 23 April 2025 1217 detected. Heard year-round. Frequently detected by mistake, but when I listened to it, it was really a robin. Listened to some newer recordings up to November 14, and it's often a single note. At Vogelwarte I hear a series of single notes repeated in a somewhat irregular rhythm, with a slightly higher note once in a while. I checked ornitho.ch to see if any are being reported in Kanton Zuerich, and yes, one was even reported at the Pfaeffikersee, close to home. Then wanted to know more about them, and found some interesting information: Vogelwarte.ch says 'der fast starengrosse Kernbeisser ist ein Charaktervogel der Laubwaelder. Dort heisst es auch sie sind in Siedlungen zu sehen (woanders hiess es in Gaerten.) And they can be seen year round (ganzjaehrig haeufig), as they're breeders, Durchzuegler and winter guests. MerlinBirdID mentions that the beak is grey in summer and pinkish in winter. Also 'despite distinctive appearance, shy and easily overlooked.' I wanted to see or hear one personally, so I decided I should not give up ... and finally was successful one morning in the woods near the Staldenweiher in Fehraltorf - see my page for March 9. Infreqently detected.
House sparrow 06 August 2024 07 May 2025 7540 detected. Heard year-round.
Jackdaw Mistaken when actual bird was Eurasian magpie. I've seen this species here. 19 August 2024 07 May 2025 905 detected. Heard year-round. Cool! Infreqently detected.
Long-tailed tit I've seen this species here. 07 August 2024 06 May 2025 5478 detected. Heard year-round. I've seen these at various places on the Luppmen.
Mallard I've seen this species here. 12 August 2024 03 May 2025 152 detected. Detected from January to December You don't see them often in our stretch of the Luppmen, but on 29 March 2025, there was one swimming past! Infreqently detected.
Marsh tit I've seen this species here. 08 August 2024 02 May 2025 2821 detected. Heard year-round. These stop by our bird feeder in winter, so the detections are probably correct.
Meadow pipit 09 October 2024 10 November 2024 14 detected. Detected from October to November I was skeptical that we might hear Wiesenpieper/meadow pipits in Fehraltorf, but they are seen year-round in Switzerland (they breed here, but often migrate south). I checked on November 17 in ornitho.ch, and saw that they'd been observed at the Chatzensee, Wetzikon-Ettenhausen and Pfaeffikersee-Sued, so they're not as exotic as I thought. Infreqently detected.
Mistle thrush Mistaken when actual bird was Eurasian blue tit. 07 November 2024 07 May 2025 114 detected. Detected from March to December These do appear in the area, particularly at Wildert. Some detections may be correct, but some I've checked, and the details says blue tit, which is what I hear too. A blackbird was also mentioned when looking at the details. Infreqently detected.
Red kite 06 August 2024 04 May 2025 819 detected. Heard year-round. Infreqently detected.
Short-toed treecreeper I've seen this species here. 06 August 2024 07 May 2025 1025 detected. Heard year-round. They're here often, and I finally got two photos of them in March 2025. Infreqently detected.
Tree pipit Mistaken when actual bird was Common chiffchaff. 14 August 2024 07 May 2025 79 detected. Detected from April to September I'm somewhat suspicious about the detection of a tree pipit on 2024-08-31 06:56:58 when before and after it a Chiffchaff/Zilpzalp was detected. Detected in August and September but not since September 13, 2024. Infreqently detected. Not present the whole year, just April until October.
Water pipit This species has been seen in our area according to ornitho.ch. 06 October 2024 25 March 2025 13 detected. Detected from March to November Unexpected but possible...surprising? Infreqently detected.
White wagtail Mistaken when actual bird was Grey wagtail. I've seen this species here. 10 August 2024 06 May 2025 1461 detected. Heard year-round. I'm used to seeing white wagtails (Bachstelzen) at farms, and occasionally at larger creeks/small rives. Here they're detected with about the same frequency as the gray wagtails (Gebirgsstelze), and often before and/or after the white wagtail detection are multiple gray wagtail detections. I finally saw the gray ones in March 2025, but I've never seen a white one in the Luppmen, just at nearby farms.

Dawn chorus

14 birds that sing in the March dawn chorus: European robin (Earliest at 4:34, total 514 times), Common blackbird (Earliest at 5:00, total 3948 times), Great tit (Earliest at 5:01, total 2093 times), Eurasian wren (Earliest at 5:02, total 1156 times), Black redstart (Earliest at 5:03, total 18 times), Mistle thrush (Earliest at 5:03, total 48 times), Eurasian blue tit (Earliest at 5:07, total 5641 times), Marsh tit (Earliest at 5:10, total 20 times), Long-tailed tit (Earliest at 5:11, total 45 times), European crested tit (Earliest at 5:13, total 19 times), Willow tit (Earliest at 5:39, total 17 times), Grey wagtail (Earliest at 5:47, total 579 times), White wagtail (Earliest at 6:00, total 16 times), Common chaffinch (Earliest at 6:07, total 30 times).

NABU in Germany has a very nice listing of which bird sings when, starting at 80 minutes before sunrise. Sunrise was 7:05 on March 1 2025 and 6:10 on March 29, the last morning before summer time. Assuming the times you see above were on March 29 (not true), the robin would be singing 85 minutes before sunrise - NABU says 50 is normal. The zilpzalp would be 35 minutes before sunrise. Maybe I'll do some more exact analysis sometime.
